An epic 7-day adventure to the summit of the world-famous Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, and the highest free-standing peak on the planet!
Trek through biodiverse rainforests, through otherworldly moorland, dotted with colourful flowers and giant groundsels; enjoy breathtaking panoramic views from lofty plateaus, before you finally reach your destination.
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be met by a representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi where you will meet your guide for a briefing and a final gear check.
After breakfast and a final briefing, you will be driven to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate to register and commence your journey. Today's hike is a pleasant one, through biodiverse rainforest, where you'll spot all manner of birdlife, and even black & white Colobus monkeys. You will also enjoy views of the Maundi Crater and in the distance, Northern Tanzania and Kenya. You will arrive at Mandara Hut which is located at 9000 feet, where you'll spend the night.
After breakfast and a short briefing, you will begin your ascent. Leaving the lush rainforest surrounds, into open moorlands, dotted with brightly coloured lobelia flowers, and giant groundsels. Your destination is the Horombo encampment, where you'll enjoy stunning views of the Mawenzi and Kibo cones.
Ascending from Horombo, you'll reach the saddle plateau, flanked by the soaring peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Initially, the landscapes are dotted with vegetation, but this soon becomes rugged lunar-like scenery. Arriving at Kibo hut in the early evening, you will eat and rest and prepare for your summit climb.
The ascent to the summit will commence between midnight and 02.00. Expect steep inclines and heavy scree or snow up to our first stop, Gilman's point which is located at 18,640 feet at the crater's rim from where you will enjoy some truly breathtaking views. From there we will make our final ascent to the 19,340 feet Uhuru Peak, the highest point in all of Africa. After spending some basking in the euphoria of reaching the summit, and taking some photographs, you will begin your descent, stopping first at Kibo hut for a brief rest and some breakfast, before proceeding to the Horombo encampment for some well-deserved dinner and a good night's rest.
After breakfast, you will make the steady descent through moorlands to Mandara Hut, before continuing through scenic, lush forest to the National Park gate at Marangu. Though the path is generally good, at lower elevations it can be wet and muddy, gaiters and trekking poles will help, and shorts and t-shirts will probably be preferable to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International airport. It's time to say goodbye to this amazing country, and your new friends and head home with a head full of amazing memories that you'll never forget!
Or alternatively, if you're not quite ready to head home just yet, why not combine your Kilimanjaro challenge with an amazing 7-day safari adventure?
