About the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is one of the most beautiful, historic and mysterious places on Earth, and there’s plenty to do there.

From hiking, to swimming, to rafting, to mule-riding, it’s the adventurer's playground. And for those that want a more laid back visit, there are picture-perfect viewing points and platforms.

What is the Grand Canyon?

Info

You've probably heard of the Grand Canyon before, and seen pictures of the towering cliffs of layered rock, but if you're not sure what it actually is, don't panic, you're not alone.

The different shapes and layers of the Canyon are due to geological events, and geology is something most people aren't familiar with in the slightest. And even trained, professional geologists can't agree on exactly how or when the Canyon was formed.

The general consensus is that it was carved by the Colorado River, and that it dates back 5-6 million years. However, it's now thought that the western part of the Canyon might be as old as 70 million years.

History aside, the Canyon is now a huge area full of red layered cliffs, hidden caves, waterfalls and of course the Colorado River. It's even home to one of the State's most remote communities: the Supai Village, the capital of Havasupai Indian Reservation.

Why do people go to the Grand Canyon?

Why

The Grand Canyon is one of the most beautiful and historic places on Earth, and it’s full of mysteries, so it's no wonder millions of people plan trips here every year.

As one of the world's natural wonders, it’s a bucket list destination, with plenty to see and do.

Whether you want to relax and take in the sights from the tourist viewing platform, or you want to get a little adventures and explore the Canyon on foot, by horse, or even by helicopter, there's so much to experience. You can even swim in the river, or go rafting down the river rapids.

When is the best time of year to visit the Grand Canyon?

When

Peak season at the Grand Canyon is during the summer months, but if you can, it’s best to try and go when it’s quieter.

In spring/early summer, from March to May, the temperature will be cooler (which is often better for activities like hiking) and you won't get as many crowds. Without too many people, you'll be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Canyon without having to push through hordes of tourists. Finding places to stay around the Canyon will also be easier.

Fall is also a great time to visit, between September and November, as you'll get the cooler temperatures, less crowds, and beautiful colours in the forests surrounding the Canyon.

Faq?

The Grand Canyon National Park is 4,926km squared, and there are several different rims you can visit if you want to get different views of the massive area.

The South Rim is the most popular rim to visit, closest to most western cities, and it has several different viewpoints that offer the most famous views of the Canyon.

The West Rim is also a great rim, with the famous glass sky bridge and walkway, but you’ll need to pay a separate entrance fee.

Most people view the Canyon from the rim, but if you want to get a different view, from the ground up, you’ll need to venture to the floor of the Canyon.

Hiking to the Grand Canyon floor is possible, but it's not something that should be taken lightly.

Dogs love the outdoors, so it makes sense that you’d want to bring your furry friend with you to this world wonder.
